Beating the Rainy Day Blues
As our weather has been rainy and gloomy lately, it can be easy to feel low, unproductive, sad, or even depressed. Seasonal depression is also known as seasonal affective disorder.
According to the Mayo Clinic, “Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that's related to changes in seasons — SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year. If you're like most people with SAD , your symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody.”
That being said, I thought I would share some tips for combating seasonal depression:
Buy a sunrise alarm clock
A lack of sun exposure has been linked to decreased levels of serotonin, which can lead to depression and anxiety
Each morning, your sunrise alarm clock gradually brightens the room so you can wake up naturally, rather than abruptly by your phone’s alarm clock.
Your clock will also have a sunset setting to create a relaxing and calm environment at bedtime to help you fall asleep with ease.
Move your body daily
Moving your body may feel like the last thing you want to do when it’s cozy season, but exercising releases endorphins that will instantly make you feel better! It doesn't need to be long, it might be morning yoga, a brisk walk, swimming, or a mini-home workout. Whatever it is, try to move your body once a day.
Take advantage of daylight
Fresh air and sunlight is good for you, so even if it’s chilly outside, cover up and take a walk outdoors to take advantage of the daylight!
Switch up your routine
Routines are essential for your mental health as they allow you to build healthy habits which helps you to avoid burnout. It’s totally normal to struggle with your summer daily routine during the winter, so try to switch it up during the autumn and winter months.
Book a vacation
Sometimes we just need something to look forward to! If you can, book a vacation for a little change of scenery. This will help your mood and boost your creativity.
I hope that following some of these tips will help you when it comes to combating seasonal depression throughout the year!
