With the holidays in full swing you may find yourself invited to or expected to attend many more functions and gatherings than usual. This can be triggering to social anxiety so we wanted to share some tips to help deal with social anxiety around the holidays.
Learn about your social anxiety
Familiarize yourself with the physical and psychological symptoms of anxiety. This can help you identify your triggers and what your reactions are. Knowing them ahead of time can help you create a plan!
Define what is in your control
Many parts of the holiday season are outside of your control. Make a list of the things you can control and the things you can’t…this can help ease feelings of fear and anxiety
Give yourself topics to talk about
Preparing things to talk about beforehand can help ease the pressure you feel during social situations during the holidays. You can also think about which topics you want to avoid, so if those topics do come up, you’re already prepared to exit the conversation.
Take breaks when you need
Socializing during the holidays can be draining for anyone. Take time for yourself when you can by going for a walk, running an errand, or reading a book.
Remember you can say no
Setting boundaries, taking a step back, and saying no when necessary are essential for managing social anxiety.
Talk to your family and friends
Even with the best intentions, family and friends can worsen your social anxiety. They won’t know your struggles unless you voice them, so communicate your needs and the ways they can help you!
