Starting with Simple Goals

Throughout my journey of mental and overall wellness, I have found that it can be easy to overwhelm myself with so many new habits and actions to incorporate into my daily life. There are so many amazing wellness techniques and practices out there that I find myself constantly wanting to try new things before seeing through the last one and ever knowing if it truly helps my wellness.

In my experience, I will see so many beneficial actions to add to my practices that I end up expecting too much of myself and find my shortcomings to be disappointing. I have to constantly remind myself to take baby steps in this process and add new habits gradually. One small step at a time is all it takes towards improving your mental and overall wellness while allowing yourself to see the progress and improvements it makes.

I have found that it is important to focus on the small strategies first and see them through to their results before adding in something new. Something as small as drinking one glass of water when you wake up each morning can be extremely beneficial to your overall wellness but if you add that plus journaling, plus morning meditation, plus stretching, you are now overwhelmed with too many new morning routines and cannot focus on the completion and benefits each individual addition makes on your daily life.

In this journey of mental health and wellness, I must constantly remind myself to give myself some grace, stay focused, and take it one step at a time. I hope you can find it in yourself to give yourself some grace as well and wait to add something new until you have an opportunity to see measurable improvements in the practices you have already started no matter how big or small they may be.

Some simple goals you can try:

  • Drink a glass of water when you wake up each morning

  • Incorporate 5 minutes of breathing at some point in your day

  • Take a few moments to stretch when you wake up or before you go to bed

  • Sit down to actually enjoy your breakfast and coffee/tea in the morning

  • Dedicate one hour a week to selfcare entirely focused on you. This can be a face mask while reading a book, taking a bath while streaming a new show, or anything that calms you.
